UP Bolsters Relief Efforts with New Funding for Flood Victims

In response to severe flooding across 17 districts of Uttar Pradesh, the state government has announced new financial aid to support affected families. The floods, triggered by incessant rainfall and major rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Betwa breaching danger levels, have impacted 84,392 people across 402 villages in 37 tehsils, according to Relief Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami. Districts such as Kanpur Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Agra, Auraiya, Chitrakoot, Ballia, Banda, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Chandauli, Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur, Etawah, and Fatehpur are among the worst hit.

The government has allocated fresh funds to provide immediate compensation to families whose homes and crops have been damaged. So far, 343 homes have been reported damaged, with 327 families already receiving financial assistance. Additionally, over 4,015 hectares of agricultural land have been submerged, prompting the state to prioritize aid for farmers. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure that compensation reaches affected families within 24 hours, emphasizing transparency and sensitivity in relief distribution.

Relief operations are in full swing, with 47,906 people having received assistance, including food packets and shelter. The state has distributed 6,536 food packets and 76,632 lunch packets to support displaced individuals. To address the immediate needs of those affected, 29 community kitchens (langars) have been set up, serving over 1.28 lakh fresh meals. Additionally, 905 flood shelters are operational, currently housing 11,248 displaced individuals. The administration has deployed 493 boats and motorboats to deliver relief supplies to hard-to-reach areas.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) are actively patrolling flood-hit regions to ensure uninterrupted rescue and aid delivery. In Varanasi, where the Ganga has crossed the danger mark of 71.26 meters, reaching 72.05 meters, all 84 ghats, including Namo Ghat, have been submerged. The flooding has affected 32 villages and 24 urban localities, displacing 6,583 people in the district alone. Authorities have set up 20 relief camps to accommodate and assist residents.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken a hands-on approach, forming an 11-member ministerial team, dubbed ‘Team-11,’ to oversee relief operations across 12 affected districts. Ministers, including Finance Minister Suresh Khanna and Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar, have visited ground zero, inspecting relief camps and distributing essentials like dry rations and fodder for cattle. The Chief Minister has instructed district magistrates, superintendents of police, and chief medical officers to maintain 24×7 monitoring of embankments, ensure swift drainage of waterlogged areas, and provide comprehensive arrangements for food, medicine, sanitation, and the needs of women and children.

To prevent waterborne diseases, 757 health teams are conducting medical check-ups, while 1,193 flood posts have been established to monitor the evolving situation. The state has also prioritized livestock safety, relocating 2,759 animals to safer locations and ensuring fodder and veterinary care. In Prayagraj, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya conducted an aerial survey, noting that the current flood situation surpasses the severity of the 2013 floods.

The government’s proactive measures extend beyond immediate relief. Over the past 7.5 years, Uttar Pradesh has allocated over ₹2,900 crore in aid to flood-affected individuals, including ₹86.71 crore to 1.57 lakh farmers for crop losses in just 20 days last year. The state has also established 612 flood posts and allocated ₹10 crore for relief efforts in anticipation of potential flooding, showcasing a robust disaster management strategy.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain. At least 12 people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents, including lightning, drowning, and snakebites, over the past 24 hours. Opposition leaders, such as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, have criticized the government, alleging a focus on event management over public welfare. However, the state remains committed to ensuring no loss of life and providing timely aid to all affected families.
